We decided not to take the tour we had reserved and it turned out to be a good decision as it rained very hard all morning. It gave us a chance to catch up on a few things including starting to pack since we only have about one week left on our cruise. We passed Santarem on our way up river to Manaus and we had visited here on our 2012 cruise. The city has about 300,000 residents and is a hub for the entire area. The city is connected by road to the south of Brazil and is a port for the export of soy beans. There is also a "Meeting of the Waters" here where the clear Tapajos river meets the Amazon.
The Amazon is so massive that we came back to Santarem via a different channel for part of the way. At times we were more than 50 miles away from the channel we had used to go up the river.
We were still docked in Santarem at lunch time and it had finally stopped raining. There were quite a few dolphins not far from the ship and Noel spent some time trying to get a photo of the pink dolphins, not an easy task as they spend very little time at the surface and you have no idea where they will come up.
The only shot where the dolphin showed in the frame
The city of Santarem
Most of the city is located on the Tapajos river
